Grass Roots Reading Group: "The Tiger's Wife" by Tea Obreht
08/07/2012 6:30 pm
Tuesday, August 7, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Marissa leads her first Reading Group in a discussion of The Tiger’s Wife, by Tea Obreht. The novel was winner of the 2011 Orange Prize, and a National Book Award Finalist.
Natalia is a young doctor in a Balkan country on a mission of mercy at an orphanage on the sea. Her grandfather, also a physician, has recently died under mysterious circumstances in a small village no one has ever heard of, supposedly on his way to meet her. Contemplating this mystery, she dwells on her grandfather’s stories of a tiger escaped from a zoo bombed by the Germans in WWII and its mysterious bond with a deaf-mute woman, and of his encounters with “the deathless man”. It is in the mysterious narratives from her grandfather—and others—that she finds the answer she’s looking for.
